Star*Explorer crossed another major threshold, acquiring 100,000 hits.
This comes as no surpise, since S*E continues to be the leader of the pack. With its most recent build 175 Star*Explorer added a bulk Image Replace functionality, the feature pros were longing for. This build also accomodates for new Exta Large download sizes that recently became availalbe on the Smugmug.

New VSPS licensing system is lighter, faster, simpler for the end user and does not require administrator mode to activate.
Existing license holders are safe, though. S*E currently work with both systems, so unless you are experiencing Vista-related issues, there is no need to request a new license.

The latest version fo Star*Explorer features online duplicate validation. With this option turned on it very easy to implement "picture of the day" logic locally. You can simply drop the same folder to the same album, and S*E will take care of what has been already uplaoded and only let new images to go through.

Tony and Allen reported problem downloading what turned out to be watermarked files. Same went for 2d copies made with SM replicating tool. Fixed.

New version now follows the recent changes to Smugmug's Upload Log functionality and has similar Day-Week-Month logic. In addition to this simple yet handy scope selection, S*E also allows you filter, sort and export the data, see errors only, etc.

With this version you'll get two new main toolbar buttons (and two correspondent Online menu items).
One provides a direct link to your server's upload log (which can be huge, to say the least).
The other allows you to download the info locally (without the pictures, hence much faster) and lets you view, sort, filter, export, save and, most importantly, re-upload the files that were (mistakenly) rejected by smugmug servers (while having valid IDs).
Since the latest versions of S*E store some upload-related info in the cache, you don't have to locate albums, retype the captions, etc. Just verify that files are in fact OK, and hit Upload:-)

New version 128: after a couple of months of dolce far niente I get back to my programming workbench. Some long-standing issues resolved, way more to come - I seem to be getting back into the groove :-)

Added bandwidth cap (Power/Pro Editions only)
Added enhanced support for browser detection/selection (Options/Miscellaneous page), also displayed in AboutSystem info. Now your Firefox should work...
Added MDAC display/download to Options and About dialogs
Added Jet Provider setup to Miscellaneous page
Added PS-like scrubby sliders throughout Options editor

Most of the changes are on the Miscellaneous tab in Options editor (Ctrl+F11).
Jet Provider/MDAC may help if you have an outdated data access components and have problems with S*E's cache (try to change 4.0 to 3.5).

First one to feature local cache.
It took me awhile to pick up proper DB engine, and most of the time was spent on a framework.
For now the only two benefits are:

once albums and categories are downloaded, all next launches will be much faster since all the data is already cached locally
PRO users can now save the data into separate database and use it with MS Access.

Reinstalled Development Tools

For some (unknown) reason, my initial installation of the dev tools got all screwed up. FinallyI got a quiet morning to clean things up. removed everything, deleted target folders, basically restored the pre-installation state
and then installed everything - now step by step, saving the pertinent registry branch after each major step.
Phew, seems to work fine now:-)

Finally - new machine in place and I can compile

It took me a while to set things up, especially the development environment. But today I finally were able to put it all together and was able to compile the project again. Needless to say my new XPS is a much nicer tool compared to a 2-3 years old laptop (although there was nothing wrong with it, it was a nice horsie:-).

Second: according to Dell order status page, my new Dell XPS has been shipped today, 4 days ahead of schedule. Which means it might arrive early next week, yay! And I already got a nice graphics card replacement (I ordered it with ATI X300 SE 128Mb, but now I'm going to replace it with Gigabyte nVIDIA GeForce 6600 PCX 256Mb - I know, it's not 6800 GT, but hey, it was a bargain at $150 shipped and delivered next day - newegg rulez!)

Finally: I'm not going to the NADA trade show! Kinda makes it easy on my schedule (I'll miss New Orleans, though, I LOVE this city)

That all been said, SE development lag may only last until the end of the next week, instead of mid-February. Of course I wanna make sure it's all "loaded", tested and configured properly first, so I don't have to waste my time on it later on. But after that - man, oh man, I'm gonna have fun! And you will notice it, too, I promise:-)

Trade Show interrupts the development

I must unwillingly announce there is going to be a gap in Smugmug Explorer development starting today, until appoximately the 7th of February 2005.
The company I work for (during the day:-) goes to the all-important annual trade show, and the wrokload and show schedule makes it physically impossible for me to do anything else besides my day job.
The good news is that when I back from the show I'll resume SE development on a brand new monster XPS desktop from Dell (will be shipped by the end of January).
I want to assure you all that this gap is only a "pause", and not at all a "stop". During this pause I will continue to be online most of the time. All your feedback will be "duly noted" and, hopefully, promptly responded to (there will be a few days around Feb 1st I'll be offline, however).
I also hope this pause - and your continuing feedback - will give me a chance to reiterate the priorities and come out with the implementation and the features that you actually need the most, rather than what I think you need the most:-)

I took me over 9(!) hours(!!) on Christmas Day(!!!) to find a little missing link to a "save as" functionality. Problem was cleverly hidden by readily availalbe encoders' CLSIDs, which in reality turned out to be " ju-a-a-ast a little different".
Anyway, now it will be possible to read whatever file GDI+ can read (and judging by a number of different types' thumbnails, it can read a lot) and save it - easily - as bmp, jpg, gif, tiff, or png. Of which I would actually only need jpegs:-).
It also seems relatively easy to provide "lossless jpeg transformation" (rotations and flippings). I hope I already got enough grief and this "little ez thing" wont turn into another 9 hours on a New Year's Eve:-).
Anyway - thought I'd tell you some good news about what's coming..

It took me a while, but it seems that the finish line is close.
Just a few minutes ago my first "auto" albums were successfully created.
Still need some polish before I can deploy it, but now it's much closer.

The new version is not out yet (other things in the works), but - check this out:
now it can automatically convert your BMPs into smugmug-compliant JPEGs .
For now I hardcoded conversion parameters (90% quality, etc.), but eventually it will all make it to user-definable configuration. I'm planning to support a much wider variety of files, so you don't have to do it manually.

Coming soon: album autocreation, and then some.

The feature I'm working on now: allow user to drop the folder on the tree, and let the app to figure out, which category/subcategory/album it should go. And if album is not there - it will create it:-).
Along the same lines: you'd be able to select the whole bunch of albums and modify their properties at once. E.g. move them all from one category/subcategory to another, change the visibility and access level, sorting order, and so on and so forth.

Originally I thought I'd be done with this prior XMas, but then Don published new API, which I wanted to "wrap" first (check), then I also got distracted with licensing (check), so all in all, it's not done yet, but it's coming, and it's coming fast..

Immediate solution:

Start the app, do not autoconnect (hit ESC at the countdown)
Open Options (Ctrl+F11)
Go to the Log page
Set terminal line limit to 0
Hit OK
Connect (F9)

I know, this is the most desired and request feature...
But, helas, I still have no clear UI idea for it. Again, need this frigging getAllSubCategories method to work, then I can leave only one TreeView instead of the current two..
Then at least it would be possible to have an upload panel - TreeView with categories, subcategories and albums, and ListView with all the upload files.

Another UI issue - at which point in time shall I expand the "drop list"? Usualluy it should be pretty fast, but is some dummy drops "C:\Windows" - that would be fun.. Currently it is only expanded upon uploading process (which takes time anyway). Shall I keep it in original way and expand on demand, then in a cancellable way.. Man, this is a can of worms..

OK, once I have a local cache it will come. At least at this point I'll be in position to work on Sh..sh-sh, that's classified yet:-)

OneThumb posted in the morning that he fixed the MD5-uploads and getAllSubCategories. I rushed to check it only to find that only one part of this is correct. Multipart upload still produces an error. And getAllSubCategories, while now returning something back, which it was not, returns duplicated subcategories IDs instead of a pair (category:subcategory). Arrgh... Without it I kinda cannot proceed with local caching: not sure what to cache...
Oh well, got myself busy in the end anyway:

Implemented OnLogin/OnLogout events and handled them on the main form, so now user is not looking at the leftovers of an already dead connection
Implemented "account change" logic - if account is modified while being "connected", it would automatically disconnect and login with the new settings
Created this blog:-)
Modified About dialog; move links to another tabsheet. The whole thing is now smaller and have a much nicer and cleaner look (I think, that is:-). Also added this blog to the list of links..:-)
